Music Distribution for Independent Artists
Last updated September 2026
The short answer
Anyone can upload to Spotify. Getting heard takes a plan: a licensed beat, a solid mix, a distributor, and a release schedule that gives your song a real shot.
What a distributor does
Streaming services don't accept uploads from individual artists directly. A distributor (DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, UnitedMasters and others) delivers your song to all of them and collects your royalties.
Before you upload
Make sure your beat license covers the release — check the stream and copy limits, and credit the producer. A professionally mixed and mastered track is the difference between sounding "homemade" and sounding like the playlist around it.
Have your cover art (3000×3000 px), song title, featured artists, and credits ready.
Plan the release
Upload at least 3–4 weeks early so you can pitch to Spotify's editorial playlists and set up pre-saves.
Tease the song with short clips, then keep promoting after release day — most songs grow in the weeks that follow, not in the first 24 hours.
Keep releasing
Consistency beats perfection. Artists who release regularly build momentum with fans and algorithms alike. When a song takes off, upgrade your license so you're covered.
